About RMI
RMI is an independent nonprofit founded in 1982 that transforms global energy systems through market-driven solutions to align with a 1.5°C future and secure a clean, prosperous, zero-carbon future for all. We work in the world’s most critical geographies and engage businesses, policymakers, communities, and NGOs to identify and scale energy system interventions that will cut greenhouse gas emissions at least 50 percent by 2030. RMI has offices in Basalt and Boulder, Colorado; New York City; Oakland, California; Washington, D.C.; and Beijing. For more information, please visit www.rmi.org.
In 2013, RMI began working in China as a part of a joint research project including the Energy Research Institute of China’s National Development and Reform Commission, Lawrence Berkeley National Labs’ China Energy Group, and Energy Foundation China. The group designed a road map, called Reinventing Fire: China, to promote renewables and reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions in the Chinese economy without compromising economic growth. This roadmap has become the basis for ongoing programmatic activity.
RMI continues to expand its Chinese presence, with our Beijing office serving as the hub for our nationwide engagements. In 2017, RMI was awarded an overseas NGO certificate by China, and the National Energy Administration is our supervising government agency in China. The Beijing office works on multiple parts of China’s energy transformation including heavy industry decarbonization, power sector reform, low-carbon mobility and freight solutions, low-carbon cities, transforming the building stock, advancing clean production of hydrogen, and establishing the foundation for a circular economy.
02
Background
Under the carbon peaking and carbon neutrality call, corporations are facing significant pressures and opportunities for transformation. It is urgent to establish market mechanisms to help corporations achieve decarbonization transition in an economically viable way.

As a global leading think tank, RMI has been working closely with corporations and their supply chains, and policymakers—while supporting corporations’ decarbonization actions, we provide technical assistance to policymakers to establish new and optimize existing market mechanisms. Examples of works we do:

  • Support corporations to develop decarbonization roadmaps, with identification of actions to take.

  • Provide assistance to the implementation of decarbonization strategy, with focus on green financing, green power procurements, and carbon asset management.

  • Engage with policymakers to provide technical assistance to the market mechanism design, and build up the foundation to accelerate carbon neutrality transition.

03
The Role
RMI is seeking an exceptional candidate to join our China program’s zero carbon market mechanisms workstream, which focuses on utilizing market mechanisms to empower decarbonization actions. Through working with key stakeholders, the team aims to support the development and upscale of trading-related mechanisms (i.e., green power trading, emission trading) and financing-related mechanisms (i.e., green financing, transition financing), providing economic incentives to further zero carbon development.
The workstreams for the role include:
  • Supports research reports on urban renewal and old neighborhood retrofit.

  • Promote low embodied carbon materials, zero-carbon heating & cooling, and grid-interactive buildings through market mechanisms and technology innovation.

04
Scope of Works
In this context, this contractor position will focus on supporting research regarding market mechanisms, including but not limited to:

  • Follow the market evolvement, identify solutions that may affect corporations' carbon neutrality strategies, and conduct in-depth research.

  • Design and deliver market and policy mechanisms to support corporations to scale the decarbonization pilots and best practices.

  • Coordinate key partners and stakeholders, through information sharing, convenings, and ongoing communications, to identify market development challenges and propose solutions.

  • Other relevant works.

05
Candidate Requirements
  • Master or above with relevant majors including environmental engineering, international policy, economics, energy economics, finance and etc.

  • Knowledge of any climate-related market mechanisms, such as green power trading, carbon trading, supply chain carbon footprint, and GHG reporting, is preferred.

06
Contract Term and Compensation
  • Terms can be flexible, minimum of 3 months.

  • Very competitive compensation will be offered to the final candidate selected.

07
Application
If you are interested, please send your resume in English to llu@rmi.org before 25th June. Applications will be reviewed and proceeded on a rolling basis, so you are encouraged to submit them at your earliest convenience.
